Quick answer
- GIO is one of six insurers licensed by SIRA to sell NSW green slips (SIRA list updated 13 April 2026). GIO's website says its insurance is issued by AAI Limited trading as GIO.
- A GIO green slip gives the same level of CTP cover as any other licensed insurer. Only the price can differ.
- GIO says light vehicles can have a 6 month term if the CTP and rego are paid within 21 days of the due date. After that, only 12 months is available unless there are extenuating circumstances.
GIO is one of the six insurers licensed to sell green slips in NSW. This fact sheet covers what SIRA and GIO's own NSW CTP page say about quotes, renewals, 6 month terms, selling a vehicle and claims. We read GIO's page on 30 October 2026 and only kept facts we could check there or on SIRA's site.
GreenSlipInsurance.com.au is a general information site operated by Dominet BV. This page is general information only and is not financial, legal or insurance advice. It does not consider your objectives, financial situation or needs. We are not an insurer or broker, we don't sell green slips and we don't recommend any insurer. SIRA (the State Insurance Regulatory Authority) is the official source of green slip information in NSW, so check its website or your insurer before you act. Facts were checked on 30 October 2026. Read our general information notice. This fact sheet only uses facts from SIRA and GIO's own website. It isn't a review, and it doesn't compare GIO with other insurers.

What a GIO green slip covers
SIRA says all green slips have the same level of CTP cover, but they may not cost the same. So the cover you get from GIO is the cover set by the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, the same as from any other licensed insurer. It covers injury and death caused by your vehicle. It doesn't cover damage to cars or property. Anyone hurt in a crash, including an at-fault driver, can apply for statutory benefits, with limits for people mostly at fault. Our green slip NSW guide and CTP benefits guide explain the cover in full.
GIO's page (read 30 October 2026) says a green slip isn't required for trailers and caravans towed by a registered vehicle.
Getting a GIO green slip quote
GIO's NSW CTP page starts a quote by identifying the vehicle and the owner:
- Vehicle: registration (plate) number, VIN, chassis number or engine number, all shown on the registration certificate
- Owner: NSW driver licence number, photo card number or Transport for NSW customer ID
If you don't have those, GIO offers an indicative quote. Its page also suggests checking provisional licences, licence suspensions or cancellations, demerit points, at-fault accidents, the youngest driver's date of birth and kilometres driven before you quote.
GIO explains what happens if the registration has lapsed. If it expired within the last 90 days, you can still buy a green slip as a registered vehicle, but you must renew the rego within that time. If it expired more than 90 days ago, you buy a green slip for an unregistered vehicle and re-register it, and GIO says cover doesn't start until the vehicle is registered with Transport for NSW.
Every licensed insurer, GIO included, has to follow SIRA's Motor Accident Guidelines (version 10.1, from 12 December 2025). Insurers must not refuse to quote for a vehicle that needs CTP, must let you get a quote without identifying yourself or giving a rego number, and must list on the quote the pricing factors they used. If a factor on your quote is wrong, raise it before you pay.
Renewing a GIO green slip
GIO says you can pay or renew online, and that it notifies Transport for NSW of the payment automatically. Registered customers can use GIO My Account to pay or change policy details, including the renewal term, driver details and driving history. GIO says changes made at renewal take effect from the renewal date.
If you're a pensioner on Transport for NSW's automatic registration renewal, GIO says to pay your green slip more than eight days before the rego renewal date, then check with Transport for NSW that the registration renewed.
6 or 12 month terms
GIO says light vehicles (GVM under 4.5 tonnes) can have a 6 month or 12 month term. A 6 month renewal is only available if you pay both the CTP and the registration within 21 days of the due date. After 21 days, GIO says only a 12 month term is available unless there are extenuating circumstances for it to accept the late payment. Our renewal guide explains the matching rule between green slip and rego terms.
Cancelling and refunds
The GIO page we read on 30 October 2026 didn't set out GIO's own cancellation steps. SIRA's general process applies to every insurer: cancel the registration first, keep the letter or receipt Service NSW gives you, and send it to your CTP insurer to ask for a refund of the unused CTP. Our green slip refund guide walks through it.
Selling or buying a vehicle
GIO says a green slip is linked to the vehicle, not the owner. If you sell, the policy transfers to the new owner, and Transport for NSW tells the CTP insurer automatically. If you buy a registered vehicle, its green slip will already be with an insurer. GIO says to give it the new vehicle's details if you want a GIO green slip when that rego falls due.
For people moving to NSW, GIO says a vehicle still registered interstate can get a green slip to set up NSW registration using a vehicle identifier. If you've bought a vehicle that's already registered in NSW, transfer the registration into your name before buying a green slip. Our buying and selling guide covers transfers.
Making a CTP claim
A CTP claim goes to the insurer of the vehicle at fault, which may not be GIO. GIO's page says you can lodge a claim online regardless of who was at fault. Our CTP claims guide covers the steps and time limits.
Checking the price against other insurers
GIO is one of six licensed insurers, and prices differ between them for the same cover. SIRA's free Green Slip Price Check shows quotes from all six for your vehicle, and SIRA says to confirm the price with the insurer before you buy. Our compare green slips page lists all six insurers in alphabetical order and explains how the Price Check works. SIRA also publishes a quarterly claims experience and customer feedback comparison of the insurers. The latest one we found covers June 2026.
What we left out
- Phone numbers. We don't publish phone numbers or email addresses on this site. GIO's own NSW CTP page has its current contact details.
- Claims acceptance rate. GIO's page quotes a claims acceptance figure based on SIRA data. We left it out because we don't single out one insurer's figures. SIRA's quarterly comparison is linked above.
- Cancellation steps specific to GIO. We didn't find them on the page we read.
- Prices. We don't quote any.
