Quick answer

  • QBE is one of six insurers licensed by SIRA to sell NSW green slips (SIRA list updated 13 April 2026). QBE's site says QBE Insurance (Australia) Limited holds the CTP licence and issues the policy.
  • A QBE green slip gives the same level of CTP cover as any other licensed insurer. Only the price can differ.
  • QBE's page says a refund needs the registration cancelled and the plates handed in, and is worked out pro rata on unused days less a $15 administration fee (as published on 30 October 2026).

QBE is one of the six insurers licensed to sell green slips in NSW. This fact sheet sets out what SIRA and QBE's own NSW green slip page say about quotes, renewals, discounts, cancelling, refunds and claims. QBE's page has more detail on refunds than most, so that section is longer. We read it on 30 October 2026.

GreenSlipInsurance.com.au is a general information site operated by Dominet BV. This page is general information only and is not financial, legal or insurance advice. It does not consider your objectives, financial situation or needs. We are not an insurer or broker, we don't sell green slips and we don't recommend any insurer. SIRA (the State Insurance Regulatory Authority) is the official source of green slip information in NSW, so check its website or your insurer before you act. Facts were checked on 30 October 2026. Read our general information notice. This fact sheet only uses facts from SIRA and QBE's own website. It isn't a review, and it doesn't compare QBE with other insurers.

What a QBE green slip covers

SIRA says all green slips have the same level of CTP cover, but they may not cost the same. So the cover you get from QBE is the cover set by the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, the same as from any other licensed insurer. It covers injury and death caused by your vehicle. It doesn't cover damage to cars or property. Anyone hurt in a crash, including an at-fault driver, can apply for statutory benefits, with limits for people mostly at fault. Our green slip NSW guide and CTP benefits guide explain the cover in full.

Getting a QBE green slip quote

QBE's NSW green slip page says you can get a quote through its online NSW green slip portal or by phone. If you're switching to QBE at renewal, it suggests having your Certificate of Registration and NSW driver licence on hand.

QBE lists factors that determine the premium, such as your age, location, vehicle type, where the vehicle is garaged and whether it's used privately or for business. It says SIRA regulates the prices insurers set.

Every licensed insurer, QBE included, has to follow SIRA's Motor Accident Guidelines (version 10.1, from 12 December 2025). Insurers must not refuse to quote for a vehicle that needs CTP, must let you get a quote without identifying yourself or giving a rego number, and must list on the quote the pricing factors they used. If a factor on your quote is wrong, raise it before you pay.

Renewing a QBE green slip

QBE says existing customers renew using their QBE Certificate Number. You can renew online or by phone. You can also change to another insurer at renewal, and QBE says the changeover happens at the start of your 3, 6 or 12 month registration period.

6 or 12 month terms

QBE's page refers to 3, 6 and 12 month registration periods. SIRA says green slips for most vehicles are generally sold for 12 or 6 months, and the green slip term has to match the rego term. A 6 month rego must be paid within 21 days of expiry. Our renewal guide covers the rules.

Cancelling and refunds

QBE's page (read 30 October 2026) sets out its refund rules in more detail than most insurer pages:

  • You can't cancel because you changed your mind. QBE says the policy stays in force for as long as Transport for NSW registers the car.
  • Cancelling needs the plates handed in. When you hand them in, Transport for NSW gives you a Confirmation of Cancelled Registration letter. You send that to QBE to start the cancellation.
  • How the refund is worked out. QBE says it's pro rata for the unused days, minus a $15 administration fee, and it issues a refund cheque within 30 days of receiving the letter. It only refunds the registered operator named on the letter.
  • Moving interstate. QBE says you're entitled to a refund of the unused portion once you hand in your NSW plates, in NSW or at the interstate transport authority.
  • Write-offs. QBE says you may get a pro rata refund once the plates are removed and handed to Transport for NSW.
  • A green slip you didn't use. If you bought a green slip but didn't register the car, QBE says it may have to wait until the use-by date passes before refunding: 21 days after the registration start date for a 6 month rego, and three months for other terms. If you register with a different green slip before then, it can refund sooner.

Our green slip refund guide explains SIRA's general rules.

Selling or buying a vehicle

QBE says a green slip transfers automatically to the new owner if the car is registered when you sell it. You aren't entitled to a refund on a sale unless you deregister the car and hand in the plates. Our buying and selling guide covers transfers.

Making a CTP claim

A CTP claim goes to the insurer of the vehicle at fault, which may not be QBE. QBE's page says claims can be made through SIRA's CTP Connect portal, or by email, post or phone, and that you'll need an Application for Personal Injury Benefits and a Certificate of Fitness. Our CTP claims guide covers the steps and time limits.

Other things QBE says on its page

Good Driver Discount. QBE says drivers with nil demerit points may qualify for its Good Driver Discount, and its page also mentions drivers over 30 with zero demerits. It says the discount depends on the type and age of the car and the ages of the owner and other drivers, and that it can't apply if your NSW licence has been suspended or cancelled or you're using an interstate or overseas licence. QBE asks you to contact it to check. Its page doesn't state the size of the discount.

Checking the price against other insurers

QBE is one of six licensed insurers, and prices differ between them for the same cover. SIRA's free Green Slip Price Check shows quotes from all six for your vehicle, and SIRA says to confirm the price with the insurer before you buy. Our compare green slips page lists all six insurers in alphabetical order and explains how the Price Check works. SIRA also publishes a quarterly claims experience and customer feedback comparison of the insurers. The latest one we found covers June 2026.

What we left out

  • Phone numbers, email and postal addresses. We don't publish phone numbers or email addresses on this site. QBE's own NSW CTP page has its current contact details.
  • Discount amounts. QBE doesn't publish a figure for the Good Driver Discount, so neither do we.
  • Car insurance offers and sponsorships. These aren't about green slips.
  • Prices. We don't quote any.
